Discover Weedon Island Preserve After Dark
There’s something magical about the natural world after the sun goes down—and on Friday, May 24, we’re inviting Friends of Weedon Island (FOWI) members to experience that magic firsthand.
We’re thrilled to announce a special Members-Only Night Prowl, a guided hike through the Preserve led by our expert staff and dedicated volunteer naturalists. This after-dark adventure offers a rare glimpse into the island’s nocturnal wildlife and is sure to spark wonder in nature lovers of all ages.
What to Expect on the Night Prowl
The hike kicks off promptly at 8:00 PM, just as the Preserve begins to shift into its nighttime rhythm. To preserve the tranquility and safety of the event, participants must arrive before the gates close at 8:00 PM sharp.
Here’s a look at what’s in store:
- Bat & Owl Listening Stations: Using our brand-new bat sound detector system, we’ll tune in to the ultrasonic calls of bats and the hoots of hidden owls.
- Insect Spotting Under UV Light: Explore the hidden glow of scorpions, beetles, and fireflies as they come to life under ultraviolet beams.
- Infrared Wildlife Watching: With our infrared camera in hand, we’ll search the shadows for armadillos, raccoons, and other elusive creatures of the night.
